Director's Message from Dr. Stephen Johnson

Saturday, January 17, 2009

Greetings,

Last Saturday, approximately 500 people attended the Memorial ceremony to send off our brother Timothy Raymond Aguilar, the man who walked with the medicine name “Whispering Eagle”. We weren’t certain as to how many people would attend but we set up 200 chairs which was the capacity for Gildred Hall at camp Hess Kramer. People were sitting on the floor and standing wherever there was space including on the patio and in the foyer to the hall. We were not able to utilize Gindling Hilltop camp, where we normally have held our retreats, because a kosher women’s group was using the facility.

The hall had been decorated with 4 altars, and we crafted the ceremony to commemorate Timothy in ways that we felt were appropriately fitting for this occasion. Many men and women worked all week to organize and convene this event. It was truly a love fest with an equal number of men and women opening their hearts to grieve and to express their emotions that also held an array of feelings including gratitude for what Timothy had shared and provided along the way. During the commencement of the ceremony the bagpipe player that has performed the music for such films as Braveheart and Titanic played the theme from Braveheart, one of Timothy’s most favorite pieces of music. Ed Munter and Tommy Holmes also graced us with songs that they had written.

Christine Grey (longtime friend of the Aguilar family), Medicine Woman Irene Skau, Andrew Soliz, women from Timothy and Irene’s Sacred Souls community and men from the Sacred Path Wisdom Council participated in the ceremony and evolution of the day. I was honored to be one of 3 people to offer brief eulogies including Mark, Timothy’s cousin, and Sherry, his girlfriend. Steve, Timothy’s brother, offered a touching and humorous in-depth eulogy providing us with an experience of Timothy as an energized boy growing into manhood. Chris Rudy put together a compilation CD of 18 of Timothy’s invocations and talks during our recorded retreats. We played one of the tracks that had the Braveheart theme underlying it while Herb Rubenstein showed a series of slides reviewing Timothy’s younger years and his time with the Sacred Path community on retreat. The ceremony ended with a spirited drum and dance circle. What a fantastic way to celebrate and send off a great man who touched so many lives in such memorable ways.

Chris has offered to make copies of the CD for those that would like to donate to a scholarship fund established in Timothy’s name. We’ll be providing more information separately about the CD and the Timothy Aguilar Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Andrew told the participants that it is a customary tradition to understand that it takes 13 moons to fulfill one’s grieving process and last Saturday was the first of the series of full moons. I have received so many messages from people and have spoken with several individuals that have just heard the news of Timothy’s passing. The depth of the grief that people are expressing is quite touching. Though we will continue to experience waves of grief over the next year we will also move forward in ways that will honor the memory of Timothy through our well-implemented intentions on behalf of our expanding community. The spring retreat in April16-19 will be a combination Sacred Path Men’s Retreat and Call to Adventure Rites of Passage Retreat for fathers and sons, boys and mentors. This will also allow us to commemorate Timothy on the hill. Many men that were present at the Memorial told me of their intentions to attend this retreat.

We have an opportunity to gather sooner than later for a day to look at our lives mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. In two weeks on Saturday, January 31st we will come together to explore what it means to be Healthy, Wealthy and Wise. Cardiologist Howard Elkin, Fitness Trainer Chris Rudy and businessman Richard Bizzaro will join me in presenting information and facilitating a discussion of significant areas of concern to men regarding their lives today. What I have noticed is the dramatically increased level of stress confronting people today. From the economy to personal health issues to relationship concerns people appear stretched to the max. One of the men coined a new word to describe what he has been feeling: stressure is a mix of pressure and stress. The intent of this Symposium is to provide participants an opportunity to kick off the new year on the right footing and to put in place a foundation for reducing stress and enhancing the capacity for maintaining balance in the midst of ups and downs and the continuity of progress during the evolution of change.

As you may know, these programs are provided for your edification and well being in addition to generating the funds to run the Men’s Center and to be able to provide more programs. We do not take any personal remuneration for facilitating these programs. We are grateful for your support of the programs and the Men’s Center. I am also aware that there are those among you that though you would desire to attend you may feel it necessary to decline due to the pressing financial considerations you have regarding where to spend your money these days. In awareness of the financial demands that you may be contending with, feel free to request a reduction in the fee so that you can attend this event. You will find further information and a registration form on the Symposium below. If you are planning to participate please register right away so that we have a sense as to how many will be in attendance.

On a final note, the Saturday before Christmas was a special day. Steve Branker, LeVar Burton, Grant Mays, Phil Gross, my son, Derek, and I had the joyful opportunity to participate in Cameron Bonner’s C.U.R.E. Christmas party at Helen Keller Park. This was the third annual event and 3 years ago there were 50 people in attendance and this year there were over 2,000. We met and spoke with so many incredible people that came together to make a positive difference in the lives of so many children and in their community. I was also thrilled to meet USC Coach Pete Carroll and Brian Center from A Better LA. The Men’s Center is entering a partnership with this organization so that we can expand our ability to support the C.U.R.E. program and provide more scholarships to inner city kids so that they can attend or Call to Adventure retreats. Check out the You Tube video of the event in the link below.

In the spirit of the days ahead as we celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King and the inauguration of Barack Hussein Obama I send you my best wishes for a blessed New Year,

Stephen

HEALTHY, WEALTHY & WISE SYMPOSIUM JAN.31

What does it mean to you to be healthy, wealthy and wise? Perhaps it has occurred to you that health doesn’t just pertain to the body; wealth doesn’t just pertain to your pocket book and wisdom doesn’t just pertain to your mind. For example, you can be financially, physically and mentally depleted while continuing to make deposits in your spiritual bank account. One’s prosperity is not just measured in dollars or other forms of material success. Abundance is a state of mind; a condition that allows you to choose faith over fear, acceptance over resistance, truth, love and simplicity over that which tends to create the more complicated life.

On January 31 we will convene for a day to explore what it means to live an uncomplicated life, one without worry and anxiety with the freedom to move through life with relative ease, regardless of what the situation or prevailing condition. We’ll discuss what it takes to have good physical, mental and emotional health. It comes down to living in the energy of the natural order. Those of us on The Path have discovered that once you shift into the Universal Divine Order that flows from the metaphysical laws that govern the flow of the universe, your life takes on a completely different state of consciousness and balance.

This Symposium is designed to bring good men together and once again to bring out the best in them. We will gather on this day for the opportunity to interact with the facilitators who will present information on their areas of expertise and invite open forum discussion. The intention is that you will leave this event with a better understanding of what it takes to further the endeavor of living a life balanced between the physical world and the spiritual realm; to further your awareness and understanding regarding your health, economic concerns and the right use of your essential intuitive wisdom.

Dr. Stephen Johnson will present on the integrated field of Spiritual Psychology that includes a focus on metaphysical laws and mindfulness training as well as the proven benefits of practicing body awareness, meditation and affirmative thinking. Stephen will invite participants to share about the challenges we are facing as well as what we have gained from our own experience with the practice of “Right Livelihood.”

In 1974, while a Doctoral Fellow in Rehabilitation Psychology at the University of Southern California, Stephen published his research on the Benefits of Yoga Therapy on Self-Concept, Conflict Resolution and Emotional Adjustment. He went on to study a post-doctoral curriculum for four years at the National Academy of Metaphysics and was one of a group of individuals assisting Leonard Orr during his pioneering work with the powerful breathing process called Rebirthing. This became the foundation for the blending of spirituality and psychology that has been at the heart of Stephen’s personal evolvement and his professional practice as a psychotherapist and educator for nearly 40 years.

Dr. Howard Elkin suggests that a New Year always reminds us of our quest and need to make constructive changes in our lives. A true motivator when it applies to health and fitness, he will discuss nutrition and exercise goal setting and how physical wellbeing is the cornerstone of his 4 quadrants of wellness. Paramount to healthy aging will be a discussion on hormone evaluation and replacement. Furthermore, to separate a scientifically based approach from all the media marketing hype, there will be a discussion with recommendations for selecting truly useful supplements for the average busy man living in this stressful time. Howard presented at the October retreat to an audience of 60 men that found the material to be quite informative and useful.

Howard was born in Richmond, Virginia. After obtaining a B.A. in English, he attended the Medical College of Virginia where he earned his MD degree in 1979. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Michael Reece Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago, followed by a fellowship in Clinical Cardiology at Northwestern University. He moved to Southern California with his wife in 1984 where they raised two daughters. After completing an additional fellowship in Invasive Cardiology, he opened his practice in 1986 in Whittier, California where he still resides.

Howard is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, and
Anti-Aging Medicine. He is best described as an integrative physician
that espouses the best in both traditional and alternative treatment modalities.
His approach in managing his patients is focused on linking the connection between
the body, the mind and the spirit. His interest and knowledge in nutrition,
exercise and stress reduction benefit his patients as well as those who attend his seminars
and speaking engagements.

Howard is also an athlete who has competed in gymnastics, marathons and triathlons.
During the last ten years he has successfully competed in bodybuilding on the national level. His zeal for exercise has garnered attention from various colleges and universities where he has served as team physician.

Chris Rudy is a personal trainer, certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine. He creates individual fitness programs for clients using an integrated blend of weight training, core/abdominal and cardiovascular exercises with an emphasis on functional moves that will improve everyday life.

Chris was a featured personal trainer on the Discovery Channel's "National Body Challenge" series in 2004. His client lost 28 pounds and won the competition! He works with everyone from beginners to athletes to seniors with a focus on teaching you how to exercise safely and effectively. Chris recently celebrated the grand opening of his new Oasis Personal Fitness facility on Ventura Boulevard in Woodland Hills.

Chris states, "I enjoy working with people of all fitness levels, and see the potential in everyone. Commitment is the key. If you are willing, I will show you how to reach your goals and together we can design a program and make lasting lifestyle changes that work for you."

Not since before we were all born has there been a more challenging, frightening and possibly seductively opportunistic time. Join the men who will be attending this event as we explore how we all are dealing with the “Economic Meltdown” and how we can cope, grow and prosper during these unprecedented times.

Your input can be significant as we enter into an in depth discussion led by Richard Bizzaro inviting all of us to share our experiences, hopes and fears about money and the economic challenges we’re confronting.

For over four decades Richard Bizzaro has been building businesses. Starting in the fashion business on 7th Avenue, he studied under the first empire builder in apparel, Chester Roth, participating in the growth of a 500 million dollar conglomerate. He became the youngest Vice President ever to sit next to the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of one of the leading brands for 13 years.

Meeting his wife, Wendy, during the last year of his tenure at Kayser Roth, they set out to pioneer the new fashion of Active Sportswear. They went on to develop Wendy Gray Sports Editions, a design studio that created projects for Reebok, Japan's leading store Seibu, Rollerblades and many leading companies

Joe Weider, the Fitness Industry's leader, asked Richard to join him in 1983 to build the budding empire know as Weider Health and Fitness. 15 years later Richard led a successful Initial public offering on the NYSE after reaching $1.2 Billion in sales from $25 Million over those 15 years. The business took him to Utah where a total of 565,000 square feet of manufacturing, distribution and administration offices were built. A staff that was assembled in 1990 with 47 employees grew quickly to over 1400 in seven years and the business remains one of the largest employers in nutrition. He was named Entrepreneur of the Year in 1997.

Richard then turned his attention to the Direct Marketing Industry where he merged two of the leading companies into the 6th largest Multi Marketing Company in the world. He sat on the Board of the Direct Selling Association in Washington D.C and shared the position with Amway, Avon, Herbalife, NuSkin and all of the leaders of the industry.

Today, he owns a company devoted to Leisure and Travel. The All Resort Group, the largest Transportation Company in Utah, has expanded to 4 major western cities and has grown in sales to over 400% in 4 years. Richard enjoys skiing with his children and grand children and riding some of the Grand National Champion horses that Wendy has trained and shown all over the Western United States. Wendy and Richard currently live on the Gray Barron Ranches in Park City, Utah and Chatsworth, California.

Some Impressions of Timothy Aguilar's Memorial Service

January 10, 2009 will be a day I remember for all my days. As I nervously drove up to the mountain where we always share love, pain and joy, and where we grow and transform our lives, I was struck by the absolute beauty of the day - a clear cloudless sky, cool crisp air that seemed somehow different - a warmth was present. I was thinking that it would be like Timothy, in true coyote fashion, to arrange the universe for his memorial service on the most beautiful day possible: on his mother's birthday and a grand full moon.

The service was impeccable. Seeing old friends and powerful allies on the Sacred Path again, some for the first time in years, was an incredible feeling. All the speakers were so heartfelt and eloquent, the altars were so beautiful, the music superb and the drumming POWERFUL

I was struck by the magnificence of the souls with whom I stand shoulder to shoulder: my brothers on the sacred path and the loving powerful support of all the women present.

It was a fitting ceremonial farewell to a man who gave so much love to so many. There is no replacing Timothy Aguilar. We in the Sacred Path energy must grow again and discover something deeper about who we are and will become. We have much to consider and great lessons to reflect upon as we move onward and upward. Thanks and blessings to all who were there and gave their love and energy to create such an auspicious gathering to pay tribute to our beloved brother. May we all breathe deeply and rest easy in our memory and experience of Timothy in our hearts. I left with mine full of joy.

Thank you, Timothy. Fly with the angels

Your eternal brother,
Christo Pellani

Thank you to all of those who participated in planning Timothy's memorial service. It was a very special day with one big loving family. He whispered and reminded me of how short and special life can be. Timothy's smile, walk with head held high and passion for life will live forever in my heart and spirit. It was Timothy who invited me to my first Sacred Path Retreat some 12 years ago.

Hasta luego hermano

I was running late - kind of on Sacred Path time.
So the traffic was backed up creeping into the Hess Kramer parking lot. For
the first time in my life I was enjoying the stop-and-go because It was so
wonderful seeing the throng of cars piled from PCH to pay tribute to our
Whispering Eagle.
I decided to park on PCH and walk up and noticed a huge bird flying above (I
wanted to believe it was an Eagle, but it was probably a hawk).
I kept thinking that Timothy was flying above and laughing about the traffic
jam his memory is causing. I'm sure he was honored by the turnout. Anyone
who knew him would have expected nothing less. The journal that was
distributed had a beautiful picture of him in the foreground with the
glistening ocean in the background and all I kept thinking as I noticed the
grin on his face was that he was going to come walking into the room any
minute and proclaim "GOTCHA."
And if he did, I wondered, would the lesson in the sadness we're feeling
remind us to spend more time on the sacred path or would we be angry at him
for his radical way to get to us?
As I left, I kept thinking about the speakers talking about Timothy's tall
stature. He always showed his pride and would look deep into the person he
was engaging. And since that day, I am still standing more erect and am
more committed to pass forward Timothy's message which was reflected in his
walk, more then the talk. His memory will keep us all walking taller.

To the men of the Sacred Path

On behalf of all women, I extend to you my deepest condolences on the loss of our dear brother Timothy Whispering Eagle Aguilar.
You, his brothers, remain the body, heart, mind, and soul of a magnificent man. It is with this awareness that I acknowledge your place in his life and honor each of you as his brother.
There are no perfect people. It is with the unconditional love that Timothy taught me that I embrace each of us in our flawed places with gentle kindness. From this place, I extend to each of you an apology from the depth of my heart and soul for the wound that we as women have inflicted upon the masculine. I am sorry for the harm we have caused you, your children, your loved ones, and your brothers. We are deeply sorry.
As we move into deeper consciousness, my sisters and I shall be better caretakers of the heart. There are many of us who recognize and acknowledge the hurt we cause men. We are working towards change.
Timothy loved all of you deeply; each of you brought a unique and soulful intimacy into his life, creating a powerful tapestry of music, laughter, tears, brotherhood and love. Over the years he told me this often
It was my joy to listen to his stories about his brothers and how sacred they all are to him.
Thank you for the Sacred Path. My life has blossomed because of your divine work. I can look into the lives of the men in my life and see all of your sacrifices, prayers, tears and joy.
Thank you for everything. Thank you for loving Timothy. Thank you for being there for him.
I thank Timothy for allowing me to be one of the many people in his lifeboat.
With immense love and respect for each of you.

My Friend

Timothy was a man of great strength. He came into this life with a mission, to live life fully. I was very fortunate to have a friend and teacher who taught me to live life with an open heart. He never told me how to heal. He allowed me to find my way and in the process I found myself. He held space for me to heal my broken heart, to find my voice, and in time I have become the woman I am today.

He lives on in all of us. He is free, in Spirit, a Traveler of many dimensions. Timothy, the human being came to change us all. I will miss him.

See you on the other side, my Friend.

I’m not a “blogger” so I didn’t want to try to navigate a way to put this on the blog about Timothy. I’d appreciate it if someone would. Or at least get this to Steve Aguilar.

As I conveyed as best I could to those present on Saturday, I couldn’t NOT attend. Thankfully, I have a very understanding wife. It was a beautiful service and celebration of Tim(othy)’s life. I learned a lot about him that I didn’t know. I had always sensed that Timothy felt that sharing his past was only worthwhile if it helped. So the carefree, adventuresome Tim that I always felt was there was one I never got a taste of until Saturday. I am deeply grateful for Tim’s cousin Mark’s remembrances. That quote about skidding into life’s end, slightly worn and shouting “Holy Shit, what a ride” is one I’ve heard before and one I truly appreciate now as a great description of a Tim’s spirit that was larger than life.

After the service, I sat for a while on the soccer field enjoying the warm weather and taking in the moment. Overcome with emotions, I felt like crying. I couldn’t. That scenario has happened many times over the subsequent days. Timothy did wonderful things for my father, my brother, and me. I think about that, and I think about the fact that that is gone now and I’m drawn to tears. Then, suddenly, Timothy steps in. All I see is his smile. His calm, reassuring, disarming smile. And I can’t cry.

Timothy “Whispering Eagle” Aguilar.
Based on memories shared by beloved family and friends

He believed in Shamanic healing,
Serving all of life was his goal
He had the ability to see; deep within your soul
He could look beyond your fear; clearly help you see
The cause of your own suffering, the wounds inside of thee

He led anxious seekers on vision quests,
Walked on tight ropes, climbed 100 ft. poles
He taught so many men, women and children
To push their outer limits, reach for loftier goals

In hospice he held tight the hands, he consoled the many bereaved
He shared wisdom of a world beyond the ones that most perceived
He stoically sat beside family and friends, their loved ones now dying
He helped to ease their pain, dried the tears that they were crying

His soul loved, loved, loved to dance
He was pure magic, fast on his feet
He was a master, leading circles of drummers
Entranced to the tune of the Djembe beat

He was adventuresome and bold
He loved the thrill of the dance
He served our country with honor
In his military, statuesque stance

Dr. Stephen shared wisdom councils & community gatherings
Giving gifts of service with big smiles getting ever so wide
He made you walk a little taller; your light shined a bit brighter
Tears fell a little easier with Timothy by your side
.
His alter is an assemblage of medicine gifts
Bestowed with Tim’s blessings and prayers for all
Reminders of his eagle spirit soaring higher
Spirit brother - listen carefully for his call

Kris Grey & his mother knew - they would be life long friends from the start
Moved by his enormous courage & his ability to speak from his heart
They shared many favorite moments with Tim – so moving and so much fun
Talking & walking, a ceremony & a healing - fire circle under Indian sun

Timothy stood with love smiling, playing his Djembe drum in front of a big bon fire.
Sherry wrapped in his blanket, feeling his fierce beat – fun, full of warmth & desire.
Rhythms moved by a message of joy for the love now sparked within each
Magical moments shared between them, moonlight over Dockweiler Beach

So tender, kind & gentle were the sacred, loving words he would utter.
If you listened closely you could hear them – two hearts - gently a flutter.
On his knees he was humble before her & God, grateful for his angel on earth.
Sharing the candles last flicker – they’ll meet again, this is just his rebirth

He was very loyal & protective of his dear friend,
Michael “Lotus Flower” O’Grady
A great talker, wonderfully witty & kind,
Together, they could charm any lady

Michael laughed; he looked like the Ronald McDonald clown
When he dyed his own hair for a movie
He wasn’t afraid to go out on the town
He wasn’t too proud to look goofy

For his niece Theresa, he shared unconditional love
Her uncle Tim was there for her since her father passed away
At the birth of her daughter, his smile warmed the room
This is her memory of their favorite day

He spoke eloquently at their wedding
And welcomed Renee as the sister he never had
For his little brother, Steve’s choice, he was very, very glad
Wisdom of the other worlds, is a gift the he brought to ours
Once your heart was open, he’d share visions of a world beyond stars

One of many, treasured, father & son moments
It was their time shared at a sacred path weekend
Born out of their Native American bloodlines
A glimpse of past lives for a second?

By opening up and sharing straight from his heart …
Timothy gave his dad the courage to do the same
Moved beyond his fears, he took up the talking stick…
With gratitude for his son & the words as they came

He was very kind and loving to his blessed son Ziari…
Standing beside him - until… his very last day…
Timothy and his brothers - had the greatest teacher,
Their beloved father - their role model – Ray

The Shaman’s journey was his own
Timothy has entered that altered state
In full consciousness of other realms
He still has the ability to communicate.

We can ask to live until we are as old
As those grapes out their shriveling on the vine
God always takes us always in his time.
Even when we think we must be in our prime
God ALWAYS takes us and always in Gods time

Timothy fought a valiant battle now it is time to say goodbye
To wish him well on his journey home - Eagle Spirit soaring high

A Review of Awakening the Authentic Self

by Dan Franklin

“What if the future of God, which means the evolution of our own species, literally depended on us as individuals in real time? If it really did, would we continue to live our lives in the way that we’re living them?”
Andrew Cohen

The following is a review by MCLA Associate Director Dan Franklin, of an extraordinary cd set by Andrew Cohen called Awakening the Authentic Self, The Path and Practice of Evolutionary Enlightenment (Published by EnlightenmentNext)

I became aware of this wisdom teacher through my exposure to the pundit and world-renowned philosopher Ken Wilber, founder of the Integral Institute. Wilber is well worth learning more about in his own right. Both Wilber and Cohen, who has his own organization, are among a growing group of individuals and organizations that are exploring the farthest reaches of human consciousness in relationship to the evolution of our species and the profound affects the urge toward self-realization can have on our world culture and it’s institutions.

Andrew Cohen’s work is provocative and important… This beautifully packaged and well organized cd set recorded live during a retreat in Tuscany, Italy, is an expression of what he believes to be the next evolutionary step in consciousness and in human evolution. It’s subject is nothing less than awareness becoming aware of itself and then operating through “our” moral development. Transcend, re-enter and expand is the message. Manifest God through our actions in the world is his moral imperative. It is how God enters time and space. Through us, it is done. “I AM” with a responsibility chaser. Moral development along with creative zeal is God’s Will operating through us, creating through us. Waking up is a moral imperative because it is the means by which we complete the work of our souls, the incarnated souls. It all makes sense as cosmic plan with exquisite freedom to choose to follow it or not follow it. We can choose to liberate ourselves from the tyranny of our egoic structures, our personal stories, and madnesses, and facilitate the “process” through what Cohen refers to as the five tenets of what he calls evolutionary enlightenment.

The five tenets are:

#1: Clarity of Intention The Conscious, clear intention to evolve,
Beyond the ego, with moral development for the good of all.

#2: The law of Volitionality where the individual chooses without
conditions, responsibility for every traumatic event that happens to the self, no matter how far back in time and space.

#3: Face everything/ Avoid Nothing. The practice of Awareness as
the path and the goal. There is an effort to pay attention to
what’s happening as it is happening, always in the present
moment, never the past or the future.

#4: The Law of Impersonality. Every single aspect of your personal
experience can be seen from an impersonal perspective.

#5: For the Sake of the Whole. This is covered by the first four
Tenets. It is the evolution of the “we” for the sake of
Consciousness itself.

Cohen’s approach is stunningly radical only in its insistence that to become a self-realized, enlightened being, without the urge, the moral compass to aid the process of collective, cosmic expansion…..then even enlightenment ( no small task in itself ) falls prey to another aspect of narcissistic self-importance, no matter how spectacular the accomplishment. It is ultimately forever and always about something larger than our egoic selves, our particular stories, our anxiety-ridden and driven existential narratives or even our individual “liberation” from fixations of our egoic structures.

He expresses this conscious choosing for the sake of the whole as the most dignified and ethical way to overcome personal and cultural narcissism for a higher purpose. In other words, the motivation stimulates the desire to wake up, not just for our own bliss but for the evolution of the whole process – the creative intelligence of the universe expressing itself through man/womankind. What could be better than an even better reason to wake up? And what could be a better way to stimulate the process?

He tells us not simply to pay attention to who and what we are in our divine essence, but why we need to pay attention. What is the goal? What does our awakening serve beyond the experience of being awake? He says one can wake up and still not play an important role in the development of the species, which he sees in some ways as a wasted life. Each human being offers an opportunity for God to expand. It is an expanding intelligence, a living universe, not a static one, but it can only expand if we, with the special gifts of awareness of human beings with the potential for divine grace, wake up to the task. He sees this as our human destiny and what makes our lives relevant in whatever way we manage to wake up – is to then apply our unique talents in the world, in alignment with the awakening that must first or simultaneously begin to occur.

For Cohen, this is about winning liberation from the tyranny of the ego and more. It’s about paying attention to everything we experience as part of a process rather than simply the expression of a personal experience of transcendence.

Some of the highlights of his message:

What’s the point of defending what’s already happened?

All the highs and lows in life can be processed without the habit of personalization.

The spiritual impulse is an “ecstatic compulsion” to evolve.

Cohen is essentially proposing that a meaningful, purposeful life is self-realization plus moral development for the furtherance of the evolution of the process of God becoming even more of Itself. In Cohen’s view, it can only happen through us. We are the vehicle that drives the evolutionary process and it is our free will ( through intention and volition) to do so that determines the outcome of who and what we become as a species and how God expresses Itself in the world of form – at the very least, human form.

He’s saying, even were we to reach the lofty goal of a relatively, or even more rare, an absolutely enlightened being, to simply groove on the experience of Universal Oneness without taking on the responsibility to manifest a more evolved, more morally developed species, is incomplete and somewhat beside the point.

I find this a courageous stand, a responsible and responsive spiritual impetus, and furthers the values-driven best aspects of our religious and spiritual traditions with a new dimension of emphasis, beyond the values-free approach of many spiritual traditions that assume as we transcend form, we will naturally re-enter the world as more deeply loving and engaged souls. Cohen doesn’t want to leave this to chance, but to choice.

Cohen takes the strong position which seems to be suggestive of his own journey of awakening that if intention to liberate the whole is consciously built into the urge toward enlightenment, it will happen. More than ironically, and consistent with his moral position is the work he and others are doing to raise the bar on the enlightenment game is practicing the very principles he preaches.

Ultimately Cohen is asking a provocative and profound question about self-realization or enlightenment. Can it become as much a question of choice as grace? Rather than an escape from the world, personal, individual enlightenment can be a new starting point for an active participation in the transformation of the planet. It becomes a “sacred obligation.”

I urge you to check out this wisdom teacher and his materials. You’ll be glad you did. And so will the world.

A Society that Funds Its Fears, Not Its Visions

By Nick Rath

I don’t know where the quote comes from. I do know that when I first read it, or heard it, I got angry. I read it as any society that funds its fear cannot be funding its visions as well.

I remember hearing a minister in a church in Oregon say that where you put your attention is where you actually live. That lady spoke the truth for me. She spoke about how we mostly know people who focus in on something, giving time, money, lip service and possibly even elbow grease in the service of that thing. After the service, some of her congregation gathered with some of us who were visitors and we went to a nearby restaurant for brunch. As I listened to the folk at the table speak I understood her comments even more.

One couple talked about the forestry project they were involved with, near their home. They spoke of it with knowledge and passion. They told us what they intended to see happen in the forest, what difference that would make, and about the actual work itself. I asked about their home. They spoke of it as an extension of what their lives were/are about. He told me about the library he has amassed on the Oregon forests and ecology. She spoke of how they have solarized almost their whole house.

Another couple shared about the long distance project they are involved with, inspired by their children, both of whom are musicians. They have taken on the task of gathering funds and volunteers for a music camp and festival held in early summer every year for young musicians. Last year they had twenty-eight young musicians in a three-week camp. This year they already have over a hundred applications. During the three weeks before the camp and at least two weeks after they literally live at the camp, and they love it!

When I read the quote I thought funding meant money, and it does. Funding is also giving attention to, focus on, and being willing to invest yourself in whatever it is.   I have a friend who collects gifts for Native American families living on a reservation every Christmas time. She wraps these presents and transports them from Los Angeles to Arizona every year. She is there when the presents are delivered. This is not a good idea, this is an idea that has taken form and become a loving action. She funds this activity with her love, her attention, her willingness.

Where do these people live? At the brunch after church in Oregon, one of the other visitors asked a local where they lived. He laughed and answered, “According to the Rev I live in the projects that empower my life.”

We get to choose where we live. We can choose to fund our fears, and thereby build the structure of our life around being afraid. We can fund our loves and build the structure of our life around being a contribution to others, making a difference to the world around us, the children around us, the older people, the ill, those in need. Each of us determines what our lives mean. We answer in our hearts the question, “What does my life mean?”

There is great risk in living from love instead of fear. We may not get accomplished what we aim to get accomplished. We may be rejected, lonely, divorced. People who live in love are often taken advantage of. They often live with reoccurring heartache. They get asked, “Why do you do that? Aren’t you afraid of getting hurt?”

I believe the risk is greater to live in fear. Fear stops greatness. Fear keeps telling us not to go there (into love) because the people who go there get hurt. Yet the people we revere in our history as great people lived with the fear and chose to live in the love. Where do you live?

I fund my life in the principals of love. I put my attention on loving you completely, every day, every hour. I look for ways that I may be of service, to you personally, to the family, to the community, to the nation, to the principles of freedom, honesty, joy, love, sharing, and contribution. I live in a really nice place.
You are invited.

Cameron Bonner - The C.U.R.E. Christmas Party

Dear Family and Friends,

If you weren't able to attend the Christmas party at Helen Keller Park, here's a link posted by Sargent Ray Bercini, Sheriff's Dept. and A Better LA.

To see the video, click HERE

This event only serves to show how good things happen when we work together.
It was such a joy to see everyone working as a team to make sure all who came felt welcome.

I wish to say "thank you" to the entire Parks and Recreation staff for hosting such a beautiful event.
When we started this event 3 years ago we could only dream of such a day. Well, friends, we did it! We were able to share blessings with so many needy families. Thanks, C.U.R.E., BAFTA/LA, A Better LA, Glasshouse productions, LAFD Spark of Love, and the US Vets for cooking and serving such a wonderful meal. Also, thank you, Santa (aka Gary Dartnall), for again doing a wonderful job greeting every child who wanted to meet Santa.

In closing, I've had calls from parents with several children who came to the event. Some are in need of deeper services, so I pledged to keep in touch and work to provide community service in and around the Athens and West Athens areas.

We now are seen as true hope, so I take that seriously.

I look forward to sharing more good news on our efforts.

Much Love and Respect.

Cameron Bonner

Stephen Johnson - In Memory of a Fallen Brother

In Memory of a Fallen Brother

Dear brothers and sisters,

It is with profound and deep sadness that I must inform you of the passing of my dear friend and beloved brother, Timothy “Whispering Eagle” Aguilar. Timothy died of internal bleeding Saturday night at Daniel Freeman Marina Del Ray Hospital.

I was sitting at my desk yesterday morning working on the newsletter when a call came in from Albert Marrewa telling me that he had just learned that Timothy had been taken to the emergency room earlier in the morning. He said that Timothy’s brother had tried to contact me. I checked my voice messages and had a message from Steve, Timothy’s brother, indicating that he was on his way back from San Diego and that Timothy was in critical condition. I dressed and called my son, Ian, who had a close relationship with Timothy and with his son Ziari. I picked up Steve Branker and headed for the hospital. We pulled into the hospital parking lot as Ian, Timothy’s brother and his wife, Rene, were arriving. Ziari, his girlfriend Shana, and Timothy’s girlfiend, Sherry, were with Timothy at the time.

The emergency room doctors and nurses were having difficulty stabilizing Timothy’s blood pressure. It was 74 over 36 when I arrived and it would fluctuate from lows to as high as 124 over 95 and then back down again. I went in to see him and he was barely conscious. He was trying to speak but really couldn’t get the words out. I held his hand and stroked his head and we shared some tender moments together as I encouraged him to fight the good fight and expressed my love for him. As relatives, friends and Sacred Path Wisdom Council men arrived, our spirits would swing with the highs and lows of his blood pressure readings. They needed to stabilize him in order to take him into surgery to determine where the bleeding was coming from. He was bleeding internally faster than they could infuse blood into him.

At one point, within 5 minutes of a nurse giving us a hopeful pep talk another nurse entered the waiting room to tell us that the news was not good. His heart had stopped and they were able to get it started again but he was slowing down. She asked for next-of-kin to come with her. As loved ones gathered we huddled together to keep our spirits up. Ian and I went to get coffee and Mike O’Grady went to the deli to get sandwiches and soup. We were faithful and created a prayer circle while Ed Munter led us in a prayer over a cell phone from his location in 5 feet of snow in Oregon. I had good talks with Timothy’s father and others who were close to him as we spoke of him with such affection and caring.

Timothy’s valiant battle to survive lasted for several hours until he made his transition at 8pm. We were with him in the final moments and surrounded his bed to say our goodbyes and to wish him a good journey home. His Eagle Spirit soared over his fallen body, that body that once stood so erect and statuesque, reminding us to stand a little straighter and to walk with the dignity of the divine beings that we truly are. He was free and was dancing on the other plain, in the realm next to us. We could feel it and Irene Skau chanted over him to sing him into the light.

I sit in my home office in the center of my altars with my candles and incense burning and with the CD of The Prayer Cycle playing in the background as I write to you. This was some of Timothy’s favorite music, and as I gaze at the 3 altars that surround me I am amidst an assemblage of gifts that my brother has bestowed on me over the many years that we were partners on the Sacred Path. At each retreat we would exchange a medicine gift upon our arrival and we would bless each other and say a prayer for all those in attendance. After the retreat I would take my love gift home and place it on one of my altars and then we would often call each other to wax on about what a great retreat we just experienced. “This retreat was the best,” we would exclaim. How was that possible, we would muse, because there were so many and each one was always the very best?

In a way I must admit that I feel at a loss for words to express the depth of my feelings for this man I called my soulful brother. While I am flooded with memories, my mind can’t fathom the loss that we must contend with now. It’s unimaginable that we have lost such a magnificent human being. He gave so much to so many. He was always so selfless and generous with his love. What he gave to my family and me was immense. He would always remind me that he had my back. He was a strong presence in my life. Whether he was sitting next to me in our Wisdom Councils or in the community gatherings or climbing next to me on the ropes course, we were never above or below each other. And I always felt taller in his presence. I always shined a little brighter when I stood next to his radiance. My smiles were always a bit wider and my tears fell more easily when with him. His grace enshrouded me. I felt safer and more steadfast when around him. He enhanced my compassion as he modeled such humility and forgiveness. I lacked for nothing when we were together. The gifts that he gave me will always be in my heart to forever guide me through his eternal wisdom and love. Our companionship will live on without end. We were first and foremost brothers of the spirit, and that is immortal.

It may be tempting to wonder if we could have done more for him, if we could have given more to him, to even attempt to match what he has given to us. Inasmuch as we are tempted to ponder these questions, I know that Timothy always felt that his love was returned to him in immeasurable ways. He would never want us to second-guess ourselves or to feel that we were any less than how he held us in his expansive consciousness. Remember when he would chide you to be your best and he would nudge you to reveal the greatness of who you are destined to be? May I humbly suggest that when you think of Timothy, be mindful of his message to you and always aspire to be that person that his words inspired you to be. He modeled it and his Eagle Spirit will be soaring above and watching over us, and don’t be surprised if you hear him whispering in your ear, “I see you. I know who you are.”

So, Timothy, my dear friend and Soulmate on the Sacred path, I miss you in this moment more than words can convey. My heart has cracked open with such fervent emotion, that same intense feeling that we have felt for those that we have cared for over the years, and now beloved brother, I am swallowed up in the grief of my own personal loss in this world. But, I will remember and I will look for you in all that I see and listen for your gentle whispers and our spirits will dance together forever. I love you.

Namaste,
Stephen

Men of the Wisdom Council Remember Timothy

For Timothy-

We move through these little lives
along a tangled course of enlightenment
into a greater field of awareness.

We hold the light for each other
as we stumble through our shadows.
We reach out when we are able
and hide behind our pride when we are not.
We do the best we can.

Into a world of illusion and deception, we are all born innocent.
Into a greater awakening, we are all released.

Take these masks that have served me well
in my human masquerade.
You can place them on the alter
where my soul and I have prayed.

Or toss them in the fire
to bring light to this dark night.
These faces that you have known as me
fall away like leaves in the changing of the season
that calls further down the road.

I will follow the road as it disappears over the hill
in the dying of the light.

I will take nothing with me
and I will leave behind the ways I’ve loved you.

Don’t look for me in the stories we told each other
or in the dreams we shared.

Think of me in an open field, embraced by infinite peace
standing face to face with my true identity
in the breaking of the dawn.

– Ed Munter

I am both deeply saddened and in shock by this news. I know that Timothy changed my life and the lives of Laura and Brook (my wife and daughter) for the better. The time spent together and with his presence in community has made me a better man. The compassion , wisdom and love that Timothy shared with us is in turn shared with everyone we come in contact with. This knowledge provides me with a thread of peace in this moment.

My love goes out to Timothy's relatives and family. Timothy brought me to the Sacred Path and my love goes out to that extended family as well.

Soar Eagle brother, you will be missed. We will visit in our dreams.....

Timothy was a good-hearted, fun-loving man as I knew him with a depth of emotion and curiosity about life. While others knew him better, our generally short but intimate interactions at the retreats suggested a certain knowingness between us. He could quickly make you feel that he got where you were in your life without having to explain a lot. I found that to be a comforting and loving quality. We shared enough for me to know that his life was interesting, provocative and filled with a series of rites of passage that kept him engaged in living. I know how much he adored his son. He is already missed and will always be apart of our community, in spirit, as he was in life.

I am heartbroken over the loss of our brother Timothy. He was a special man, whose gifts helped us find our inner peace, compassion, and love. His strong body and gentle manner helped us see how we could be both the warrior and lover within our lives. His transition over the years with the Sacred Path was an excellent example of how we could be the type of man we want to be for our family, friends, and community. Timothy was my brother and my friend... My prayers are with Timothy and his family, that they may find peace and joy. God Bless Timothy. God Bless his family, especially his son. God Bless the men of the Sacred Path for they have lost a true friend and brother. TIMOTHY, YOU WILL BE MISSED...

With Much Love & Sadness, Your Brother Dan Franklin

It's the crack of dawn and we are on Meditation Point....Tim is in one of his outrageous outfits (the only guy to bring costume changes) leading the meditation. I see him backlit by the rising sun.......I see his smile.....so long my good buddy, I know your journey is over and you are at peace....but I sure miss you.

All the years I knew the man I had never once seen him upset or angry. His smile would always greet me and make me feel welcome.

Though I have been outside of the WC inner circle lately, I feel the need to say:

When I think of Timothy I feel a compassionate male energy, full of the duality that we all feel inside. He was me and I was him. He symbolizes to me what we as men struggle with, sometimes in silence....

I have come to appreciate more with time what he was perhaps here to give us. I saw a vision of a man with a strong exterior and a fragile interior, which I relate to deeply. I humbly suggest we honor him by pledging to reach out to men in need as he did for us, leaving all judgment and opinion behind and just loving each other for who we are. We get to carry each other… Bono

To me, Timothy was the epitome of walking the talk. He was what he asked us all to be, and was way tougher on himself than he ever was with any of us. In the midst of chaos and angry voices, he would speak out with gentility, compassion and love. And he would never give up. My strongest vision of Timothy was on the ropes course – he was walking the log blindfolded (of course!). When he lost his footing and fell, he had the assistants haul him back up to the log – still blindfolded- to finish his walk. May we all have that kind of courage and persistence to walk through life in the footsteps of Whispering Eagle.

Timothy Whispering Eagle was one of the most authentic men I ever came to know. He had the strength of Samson and was gentle like a lamb.
He could mirror me so I could see my fault and would spotlight me to see my splendor.
When I grew bored of his ceremonial ways, he reveled in my opposition, denial and freedom to differ.
I loved to make Timothy laugh because then I knew I was really funny.
I loved watching Timothy cry because then I knew I was safe to feel.
I hated to hear Timothy brag because I knew he was telling a truth I envied
Timothy was a living angel so he just started doing his eternal work early.
Every time I hug a man – heart to heart – I’ll remember I learned that loving hug from Timothy.
It was a blessing to know Timothy Whispering Eagle and it’s a blessing I promise to pass on.

Timothy, you taught me how to find my feet and walk like a man.
You did this simply by walking like a gentle man of God.
In my first lodge you taught me how to sit up straight and embrace the cleansing that only a spiritual fire can bring.
You did this by sitting with me and at times letting me lean upon you.
Timothy you taught me how to dance and sing.
You did this by dancing with your heart and singing from your soul.
You taught me how to be quiet and let life flow through me.
This you did without much effort at all.
And lastly my brother, you taught me how to freely give love and encouragement to another soul.
You did this by loving me.

Thank you for walking this path with me Timothy. I will try to honor you by teaching others.

Your loving brother,

Tommy Holmes

Dear Brothers,

The passing of our beloved brother, Timothy "Whispering Eagle" Aguilar, was a devastating loss to our community of men. He was a beautiful human being who helped me in many ways as well as others. I have been fortunate to have known him since he became a part of our community. I have watched him grow to the man we knew when he left us on Saturday. One of the many things that stick in my mind was how Timothy taught me to meditate one year when we were on the mountain. It was one of the most awesome experiences I have ever had. I will miss him at our monthly Wisdom Council Meetings and at the retreats. His spirit will always be with me. I am a better man for knowing him and learning to his teachings.

Namaste,

Bruce Figoten

Dear Brothers,
It has taken me a few days to get over the shock of Timothy's passing. It has been a long time since I've been able to be in direct physical contact with all of you. That does not mean that you have not been in my heart. This news left me speechless. I couldn't find words to express the empty feeling inside me. Today while reading an article on Eckhart Tolle by Donna Mosher her opening paragraph expressed what I felt whenever I was in the presence of Timothy. "Throughout the ages, spritual masters have walked among humanity, reminding us that we are divine embodiments in physical form. Each has reveaed the universal truth that we are more than our bodies, more than our minds, more than our daily tasks, more than our relationships with others and that love is our essence."
In Love and gratitude for having known him.
